Hi! I’m Branden 😄
As an IT professional with over 10 years of progressive experience centered around infrastructure, engineering, security, and cyber risk, I’ve built, implemented, and advised on security and compliance programs that enable teams to find ways to say “yes”, rather than giving a flat “no”. I’ve also successfully unlocked business activities and research spaces that were previously off limits to organizations due to regulatory requirements. Further, I’ve worked in IC engineering roles within the security and infrastructure spaces, focusing on systems security, IAM, vulnerability management, and more. Prior to technology, I worked as a porter in a small hospital cafeteria, which gave me the invaluable experience of serving others and understanding the bigger picture even when the part you play seems small - a skill I’ve carried into my work today. While I’m certainly no bastion of knowledge and am always eager to learn more, I’m committed to sharing what I know to help organizations and individuals further their personal and professional missions.
Currently, my formal credentials include: CISSP, AWS Certified AI Practitioner, RedHat CSA, CompTIA Network+, and a Microsoft Technology Associate certification for Security Fundamentals. I previously held a CMMC CyberAB Registered Practitioner certificate, and in the near future, I’m anticipating acquiring AWS Solutions Architect Associate, while on my way to gaining their Security-specific certification.
You can see more of my work experience, education, and semi-regular industry-related posts over on my LinkedIn profile. As I’ve gained more experience and generally become more immersed in the industry, I’ve noticed that many organizations either stumble over the same vague security messaging, or they struggle with getting their compliance programs “properly geared” from the start. Why build a 55 mph road and then pay for flashing signs, guard rails, speed enforcement, etc. instead of building a 35 mph road to begin with? If you’re looking for guidance or an open (and informed) ear, let’s chat!
People are often products of their environments and circumstances. Growing up as a child of two factory workers in a small town, my family and myself maintained a tight knit community for support at work and in school, and a fierce sense of tenacity to better ourselves. Because of that, I feel strongly about helping others reach the opportunities they deserve and strive to fulfill. I’ve spent time volunteering at soup kitchens, building homes, and with victims of foreign conflicts, which has further solidified my commitment to helping others. I share these things because perspective is important; while achieving business objectives is certainly critical to its success, like an old manager of mine used to say, “we’re not saving lives here.” Nobody goes hungry if this security control passes tomorrow instead of today.
Outside of offices, you can find me traveling (ask me where to next!), taking care of my two rescue shepherds, tinkering with my home server, checking out a new game, or planning an evening out with my amazing spouse!
